Anurag Shankar oversees HIPAA and other regulatory compliance activities at the University Information Technology Services (UITS), Indiana University's central IT organization. He also spearheaded the effort that led to the HIPAA alignment of IU¹s research cyberinfrastructure in 2009. He received a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Illinois, Urbana in 1990, followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Arizona and IU. He switched careers to IT in 1995 and joined Brown University as a Senior Unix Systems Programmer. He moved back to IU in 1997 and has spent the past seventeen years with the Research Technologies division of UITS, managing Unix Support, Distributed Storage Services, the national Teragrid project, and, most recently, supporting the research mission of the IU School of Medicine. He has been responsible for building several of IU's data storage environments including a Common File System, Research File System, and a Massive Data Storage System, and information infrastructures for IU's Indiana Genomics Initiative (INGEN) and the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI).
