ORG National Cancer Institute/NIH Title BIO George A. Komatsoulis, Ph.D. is Director (interim) of the Center for Biomedical Informatics and information Technology (CBIIT) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), one of the constituent institutes of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is charged with leading the National Cancer Informatics Program (NCIP), the successor to the NCI's cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG) program. During his tenure at the NCI, Dr. Komatsoulis has held a series of positions within CBIIT, including leading efforts around Vocabulary and Common Data Elements, Software Quality Assurance and Compliance, and acting as the Deputy Director from 2008-2012. In addition, Dr. Komatsoulis has been the NCI's Chief Information Officer (CIO) since August 2009. Prior to coming to the NCI, Dr. Komatsoulis was a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at Human Genome Sciences, Inc., a Rockville, MD biotechnology company. Dr. Komatsoulis has a BS in Microbiology from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the California Institute of Technology, and did postdoctoral work it the Biochemistry Department of the Johns Hopkins University and the Mathematics Department at the University of Southern California.
