He serves on the Science Advisory Board of the SciDB project, a collaboration building a new database system from the ground up for scientists. Previously, he worked with environmental modelers at the NSF Science & Technology Center for Coastal Margin Observation & Prediction, developing systems and formalisms for querying grid-structured datasets produced by environmental simulations. In both 2008 and 2010, he was awarded a Jim Gray seed grant from Microsoft Research for work on managing environmental modeling data. Bill also has received a two-year NSF Cluster Exploratory grant to develop a platform for scientific data analysis using a commodity cluster.
