Pacific Wave: Building an SDN Exchange

Session Abstract

Background: The Pacific Wave exchange is a collaborative project between CENIC and PNWGP in operation since 2004. In 2016, CENIC received a 5-year IRNC grant from NSF for “Pacific Wave Expansion Supporting SDX and Experimentation”. The grant proposed to develop and implement a parallel set of facilities (waves, circuits and switches) and supporting infrastructure to enable those participants whose networks support SDN functionality to peer with each other independent of which Pacific Wave point(s) of presence they are connected to. In addition, the grant calls for Pacific Wave to expand the functionality and capabilities of the exchange to enhance end-to-end multi-domain “Science DMZ” capabilities to support the demands of emerging requirements of the international research and education community.
Discussion Overview:
This session will discuss the technical challenges faced and successes realized by the Pacific Wave staff in several deployment aspects of the IRNC project:
A. Deployment of AutoGOLE/NSI in the Pacific Wave distributed exchange point architecture, and,
B. Deployment of 100G perfSONAR nodes within Pacific Wave, and,
C Deployment of dynamically allocatable 10G perfSONAR nodes using AutoGOLE/NSI,
D. Deployment of a FIONA Data Transfer Node (DTN) as a resource attached to the
Exchange Point for use by Pacific Wave participants, and,
E. Building and operating a parallel SDX environment in Pacific Wave.
