Uncovering the "Magic" Behind Dropbox's Magic Pocket Infrastructure
Time 10/18/17 10:20AM-11:10AM

Come hear Mark Day, Staff Engineer for Dropbox, discuss the genesis, planning, and execution of Dropbox’s largest technical feat so far.
Dropbox was founded by engineers, and the ethos of technical innovation is fundamental to our culture. For our users, this means that we’ve created a product that just works. But there’s a lot that happens behind the scenes to create that simple user experience. The greatest example of this? Our audacious project to move off of AWS and build our own storage system: “Magic Pocket.
To build one of only a handful of exabyte-scale storage systems in the world, it was clear from the beginning that we’d have to build everything from scratch. Nothing in the open source community was proven to work reliably at our scale. So we launched the Magic Pocket project in 2014. Two and a half years later, we were storing and serving over 90% of our users’ data on our custom-built infrastructure.
We’ll discuss the technical obstacles overcome, the complex logistics sorted out, and the innovative deciton-making that has transformed our infrastructure and allowed for an even more efficient cloud collaboration and storage platform!
