Reducing Security Roadblocks Using Strong Network Identity

Time 10/18/17 09:00AM-09:50AM

Room Seacliff A

Session Abstract

Historically adding security meant slowing down access and/or adding overhead. With Federal grant submissions requiring more security such as NIST 800-171, we are looking for ways to reduce security overhead and time to production but maintain or increase security in support of researchers. Utilizing strong network identity features we are leveraging services like Grouper, 802.1X and VPN with Cisco ISE and DUO identity products to provide low barrier access with increased security. Using identity information to dynamically manage network access through policy has be implemented on a per user and per group basis providing flexibility and security without increasing lead time. This presentation will step through the use of 802.1X on wired networks at Rice University and how we are using it to provide better security with less hassle for our researchers and other constituents.
