A Business Process for Deploying an SDN Enterprise Network

Time 10/17/17 10:20AM-10:40AM

Room Grand Ballroom A

Session Abstract

The problem preventing deployment of SDN in the Enterprise network is that no-one is deploying SDN in the Enterprise network.

OpenFlow is designed to separate control and forwarding. While there are clear advantages to this decoupled approach, it doesn’t work without a controller. Who will provide the software? Operators want production-ready solutions, and hardware vendors have a disincentive to provide a controller that reduces lock-in through a standard control plane abstraction.

Faucet is an OpenFlow controller that aims to provide a drop-in equivalent of a traditional LAN. With an open source license and community development model, Faucet can allow operators to share the cost of developing the enterprise SDN control plane, and break to deadlock hindering adoption.

Recent developments suggest that critical mass of network switch vendors providing suitably mature openflow implementations, is forming. In March 2017, LBLNet, ESNet and Google co-hosted a Faucet plugfest at Berkeley Lab. Six network vendors demonstrated Faucet running with their hardware, and interoperability between both equipment and OpenFlow agents. A minor contribution of this presentation is to deliver the good news from this experience: OpenFlow Is Not Dead! - multiple vendors can supply the hardware required to deploy Faucet in production.

This is a good start, but is not sufficient to manage the risk and cost of introducing a (potentially disruptive) technology such as SDN in a production network. The main contribution of this presentation is to propose a business process for Faucet’s deployment, and to describe the experiences with it, at LBLNet.
