ESnet Testbed Update & Evolution

Session Abstract

ESnet operates a high performance, high latency SDN network testbed. The testbed is open to the research and education community as a tool for experiments, and is composed of compute, storage and network elements deployed across the ESnet footprint. Past and current experiments include Data Transfer Node performance, WAN SDN, QoS, and security.

In order to be useful, a testbed must evolve as research and innovation changes. This requires understanding current trends so we can reconfigure the testbed, refresh the hardware, or even re-architect the testbed. In the recent years, Software Defined Networking has been a driving force and focus for our testbed. We are now seeing increased interest in the use of machine learning for traffic engineering and network management. Testbeds can be important tools to generate training data for machine learning models. Testbeds can also be used to verify, in a controlled environment, that models work on a real network.

This talk will describe in more detail what the ESnet testbed is, how it is being used, and discuss its evolution.
