Curt Dodds

ORG University of Hawaii - Manoa Title IT Manager BIO Stanley “Curt” Dodds is the IT Manager for the Institute for Astronomy (IfA) at the University of Hawaii, Manoa (UH). Curt and his team of 7 support 3 remote research networks each on the summit of a different volcano in Hawaii as well as 3 office networks each on a different island, a high altitude network in a guest lodging facility and 4 HPC data center networks. Curt is the Principle Investigator (PI) on the National Science Foundation funded C C*DNI INSTRUMENT: High Performance Reliable Network Access to MLO Science Instruments project. Curt leads the Mauna Kea Observatories Communication Network (MKOCN) comprising technical representatives from the 13 telescopes on the summit of Maunakea. Curt, with help from UH and Western Regional Network (WRN) peers, organized the Mauna Loa Network (MLONET) comprising technical and governance committees that coordinate network resource sharing among 3 independent, publicly funded research organizations. Curt participates in the Hawaii Internet Consortium (HIC), Translight Pacific Wave PerfClub and the I2 IPv6 Working Group. Curt has 10 years of experience in IT management in higher education and 30+ years in software engineering. Curt organized the NVIDIA GPU Workshop held at UH in Feb. 2016. Curt is an active member of the UH HPC community and serves on the UH Cyberinfrastructure Faculty Advisory Committee promoting the use of machine learning and distributed and parallel algorithms for astronomy research. Curt oversees an annual budget of $1M supporting networks that link astronomy research instruments at extreme, remote sites to science peer locations within the UH network and at universities and research organizations in the continental US and around the world.
