Virtual Reality in the Trenches: University Applications of VR/AR

Time 04/26/17 01:15PM-02:30PM

Room Meeting Room 5

Session Abstract

Higher education is not new to virtual reality, but the rapid pace of recent technological development in this space has greatly expanded the potential and accessibility for the use of VR and AR for universities. This session will explore not only the overarching virtual reality landscape but also specific applications of VR and AR from university practitioners. After an introduction and summary from Ben Fineman, Program Manager for NET+ Collaboration at Internet2, we will have presentations and a panel discussion with three university experts in the virtual reality space. Chris Collins, founder and technical lead for the University of Cincinnati Center for Simulations and Virtual Environments, will discuss current applications of head mounted displays like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. Gurcharan Khanna, Executive Director of the Center for Computation & Visualization at Brown University will discuss current applications of the YURT Ultimate Reality Theater. Joe Geigel, Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology, will discuss the use of the Microsoft Hololens augmented reality platform to create mixed reality experiences. Professor Geigel will also provide a live demonstration of the Hololens in a mixed reality environment.
