Supporting Research on Restricted Data
Time 04/24/17 04:30PM-05:30PM
Session Abstract
Restricted data is data that is governed by laws, regulations, and contractual agreements. Increasingly front-line research involves or touches data that falls in that category. That creates pressure on institutions and organizations hosting the research from two angles:
- The data is valuable and as a result systems and organization hosting it become a target for attach.
- Because the data is restricted, funding agencies, organizations and companies with a stake in the data want assurance that proper measures are in place to safeguard the data; noncompliance can result in substantial fines.
In the summer of 2016, The University of Florida, with partner Tera Insights, completed a next-generation system that cost-effectively scales to a large number of small to medium research projects that need to work on restricted data with the ability to apply high-performance computing to the data processing and analysis. The issues around research on restricted data are not purely technical, but include a significant component of managing business processes.
This session will address four components:
- Institutional commitment
- The problem to be addressed from the university’s sponsored research business point of view.
- Manage the security and compliance of the systems and business processes.
- The underlying technology, including the Tera Insights solution for secure file storage, sharing, and processing.
