Pacific Research Platform: Accelerating Science Engagement

Time 09/26/16 10:20AM-11:00AM

Room Trianon

Session Abstract

Created in 2015, the Pacific Research Platform (PRP) is a high-speed network, with the CENIC/Pacific Wave R&E optical regional network as backbone, that connects more than 20 universities and research facilities throughout the Pacific region. Within a few years, the PRP will offer the ability to move data 1,000 times faster compared to speeds on today’s inter-campus shared Internet. This talk, presented by Dr. Camille Crittenden of CITRIS and the Banatao Institute at University of California, Berkeley, will focus on the scientific applications of the enhanced cyberinfrastructure, including examples from astronomy, biomedical fields, and high-resolution video and virtual reality. It will also include a discussion of the socio-engineering infrastructure needed to realize PRP’s promise.
