High Performance Computing Environment for Research on Restricted Data

Session Abstract

With the increasing pressure from cyberattacks and data breaches, institutions and organizations, including the Federal Government, are stepping up requirements for securing data and information systems. One example is the new DFARS from the Department of Defense requiring that NIST 800-171 standards be applied to information systems that are used to process Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). The University of Florida with partner Tera Insights has completed in the summer of 2016 a next-generation system that is NIST 800-171 compliant and that can cost-effectively scale to a large number of small to medium projects that need data security with the ability to apply high-performance computing to the data processing and analysis.
This talk has three components:

  1. Present the problem we are trying to address for the university’s sponsored research business point of view.

  2. Discuss how we manage the security of the systems and compliance by the people involved in using and operating the systems.

  3. Summarize the underlying technology at the foundation of the systems security.
