Bringing Cloud Elasticity to High Throughput Scientific Applications

Session Abstract

We will review the resource provisioning capabilities the Center for High Throughput Computing at the University of Wisconsin - Madison have been developing and how they have been used by two national laboratories to leverage the elasticity of commercial clouds. These tools are part of the HTCondor distributed resource management system. The BNL and Fermi laboratories deployed an HTCondor annex in AWS that expends their High Throughput Computing (HTC) capacity by tens of thousands cores. The talk will also cover our current activities to deploy these capabilities on our campus and to expose cloud elasticity to faculty and students.
