Session Abstract

This session will bring together executives from global RENs with representatives from government, funding agencies, and NGOs to discuss new research and educational initiatives, policies, and governance structures, and to highlight the necessity for active, global coordination.

The first speaker will be Alessia Magliarditi, a Programme Coordinator in the Telecommunication Standardization Policy Department of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB). Ms. Magliarditi is the TSB liaison officer for academia and, since 2011, is the Coordinator of the Kaleidoscope academic conferences, the main ITU interface with universities and research institutions. Her talk, entitled “An Introduction to the ITU World,” will provide an overview of ITU activities relevant to the R and E networking community. A follow-up discussion will focus on identifying potential areas of collaboration between the ITU and the Global REN community.

The second speaker will be Manu Bhardwaj, Senior Advisor on Technology and Internet Policy to the Under Secretary of State, U.S. Department of State. Mr. Bhardwaj will provide an introduction to the Global Connect Initiative,a U.S. Department of State initiative announced in September 2015, which seeks to bring Internet access to 1.5 billion people in developing countries by 2020. A follow-up discussion will focus on how Global RENs currently are promoting Internet access and how they can participate in the initiative going forward.
