Daniel MagorianORG Johns Hopkins University Title Section Supervisor, Architecture and Special Networks BIO Dan Magorian is Section Supervisor for Network Architecture at Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Lab since 2011. Since arriving, he has built out APL’s wide area connections via two generations of DWDM rings to improve local carrier ISP connections at multiple peer points, including Equinix’s Internet and Cloud exchanges. He worked with the InterCounty Broadband Network administered by Howard Co Gov’t to get BTOP Federal stimulus initiative dark fiber for APL, and does continuing dark fiber acquisitions. Dan and his team get to propose and review network designs, including advanced technology evaluation and lab testing, and lower costs via the use of tech such as active monitoring and smarter pluggable optics. Previously, as co-founder and Director of Engineering of the Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX) and University of Maryland from 1992 to 2010, Dan built MAX’s Research and Education net aggregation business from a 3-man operation with 8 customers to an $8M/yr operation with 16 employees and almost 40 Federal, higher education, and corporate customers. He has also done considerable optical network consulting work and installations for Allied Telecom Group, University Maryland Medical System, and Chesapeake NetCraftsmen among other clients.
