Gregory Bell

ORG ESnet (DOE Office of Science - Energy Sciences Network) Title Director, ESnet BIO Greg Bell is Director of the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), a high-performance network interconnecting the National Laboratory System in the United States. He also serves as Division Director for Scientific Networking at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). ESnet is a $32M organization funded by the US Department of Energy's Office of Science. Its mission is accelerate discovery by delivering advanced networking capabilities and tools. Traffic on ESnet has grown 70% / year since the early 1990s, as a result of the data-intensive nature of modern science. In collaboration with its partner Internet2, ESnet deployed the world's first 100G network at continental scale. The organization has proudly advanced the cutting edge of networking technology for 26 years, with early production deployments of MPLS, IPv6, IP multicast, and DNSSEC. Greg has been a programmer since childhood, and has worked in operational networking for 12 years. Before joining ESnet, he served in LBNL's IT Division as Chief Technology Architect, and prior to that as a Network Engineer. Greg's professional interests include advanced networking, collaborative tools, sustainable IT, cloud services, high-performance computing, and security models for open science. Before coming to Berkeley Lab, Bell managed a non-profit agency serving political refugees, and worked as an analyst for Amnesty International. Bell has a Ph.D. in English from UC Berkeley (where he wrote his dissertation on the cultural history of conspiracy belief) and an A.B. in English from Harvard.
