Two Factors, No Eyes: The Accessibility of Multifactor Authentication

Time 10/07/15 09:00AM-09:25AM

Room Room 25-A

Session Abstract

The use of Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is on the rise. More services, both locally and in the cloud, are using multiple authentication factors to protect sensitive data and resources. In response, many institutions are rolling out MFA solutions quickly. While thought is usually given to the accessibility of the web interfaces for MFA solutions, key mobile apps such as software tokens often slide through the accessibility cracks.

In this session, Keith Wessel, a member of the Identity Management Team who is also blind and Keith Hays, an accessibility specialist, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will show the challenges of MFA for users with disabilities. They will show how assistive technology interacts with MFA solutions, discuss some of the common issues, and demonstrate specific examples from Googleand Duo. Attendees will learn some important considerations to keep in mind when selecting and deploying an MFA solution.
