Innovate, Experiment, and Prototype Networking Solutions using Cisco Virtual Internet Routing Lab (VIRL) Simulation Platform

Time 10/05/15 03:30PM-04:20PM

Room Room 25-A

Session Abstract

Thorough test and evaluation of complex networks, software-defined networks, network function virtualization, and IoT applications etc. present many challenges. Examples of these challenges include scaling to large networks, accuracy, and efficiency in evaluation along with the ability to easily transition between prototype and test environments.

In this proposal, we describe a virtualization package called Virtual Internet Routing Lab (VIRL) platform which combines network virtualization technologies with virtual machines (VMs) running opensource and commercial operating systems; VM orchestration capabilities; a context-aware conjuration engine; and an extensible data-collection framework. The system simplifies the process to create both simple and complex environments, network design and visualization, run large network simulations, and collect measurement data.
The proposal includes demonstration of VIRL as a platform that can be used for Education and research, network change validation, or network-aware applications development. We plan to demonstrate use cases on design and visualization of various network topologies along with multiple protocol stack, a complex L3 network simulation and validation and a simulating of Internet of Things solution using VIRL. The presentation and use cases demonstration also present the two important characteristics of VIRL virtualized environment: First, it enables the possibility of running a large number of simulations even if the computational and storage resources locally available are scarce. Second, it provides multiple features in order to facilitate collaboration among students.
The presentation and use cases also cover both operation and user experience of VIRL platform. In operation experience we cover setting up the VIRL solution in a campus network and managing large number users and sessions. In user experience, we cover both the instructors and the students/researcher experiences. Instructor’s experience includes managing sample configuration and demonstrating protocol and network deployments. Students/researchers experience includes designing and deploying complex topologies, analyze and monitor algorithms and solutions, and collaborating with other students and researchers work using VIRL.
