George KomatsoulisORG National Institutes of Health (NIH) Title NCI Chief Information Officer (acting) BIO George A. Komatsoulis, Ph.D. is a Senior Bioinformatics Specialist at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health. Dr. Komatsoulis supports the development of advanced capabilities for managing large scale data and the usage of new models of computing in biomedicine. From 2004 to 2014, Dr. Komatsoulis held a variety of positions at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), including Chief Information Officer (2009-2014) and Deputy (2008-2014) and interim Director (2012-2014) of the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT), during which time he managed the IT implementation of the new NCI Shady Grove Campus and developed the Cancer Genomics Cloud Pilots. From 1997 to 2004, Dr. Komatsoulis was a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist at Human Genome Sciences, in Rockville, MD. He has a BS (1986) in Microbiology from Cornell University, a Ph.D. (1993) in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the California Institute of Technology, and did post-doctoral work in the Departments of Biological Chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1993-1995) and Mathematics at the University of Southern California (1995-1997).
