Executive Track: NIH Perspectives

Time 04/28/15 11:45AM-02:00PM

Room Renaissance Ballroom

Session Abstract

Cyberinfrastructure (CI), the union of leading edge computing, storage, networking and expertise needed to conduct research, is a critical strategic part of basic and applied science programs conducted by Federal science agencies. A focus for this year’s executive track is to learn more about the strategies that the NIH and the NSF are taking toward CI and what the implications are at the campus level for providing a competitive research environment. The NIH and the NSF are taking different approaches to their CI strategies and these, in turn, have different implications for how researchers need to be supported at the campus level.

For this portion of the session, we will hear from NIH, specifically, from Phil Bourne (First Associate Director for Data Science) who will deliver remarks on the NIH big data initiatives, the future of computationally intensive research, and science strategy. George Komatsoulis will then speak about NIH Commons, an online interface where grant applicants, grantees, and federal staff at NIH and grantor agencies can access and share administrative information relating to research grants.
