Social Identities in Higher Ed: Why and How with Real-World Examples

Time 04/30/15 10:30AM-11:45AM

Room Meeting Room 12/13/14

Session Abstract

Campuses are increasingly turning to social identities as an alternative to "guest" accounts for people who do not have institutional identities, like parents, alumni, external researchers, and continuing education students. This presentation will begin with a review of key considerations campuses might have when deciding why, when, and how to integrate social identities, such as:

- business need drive the use of social IDs?

- level of effort required to integrate them

- risk assessment and determination

- legal and privacy policy implications

- cost-savings from eliminating local guest services

- impact on end-user experience

The presentation will include a description and demo of social identities in action at Indiana University and UMBC.
