Focused Technical Workshop: perfSONAR Deployment Best Practices, Architecture, and Moving the Needle

Where: Ohio Supercomputer Center, 1224 Kinnear Rd, Columbus, OH. OSC is located on the West Campus of The Ohio State University.

When: January 21–22, 2015 (8:30a–5:00p both days)

Hosted by: OARnet

About the Workshop

In today’s fast-paced research environment, the need for high-performance networking across the multiple domains that make up the fabric of the higher education research ecosystem is essential to the success of collaborative, data-intensive science and research. Many campuses and regional networks deploy sophisticated monitoring systems to ensure good network performance within their respective domains. However, frequently the data from these systems is not shareable across multiple domains. Measurement technologies such as perfSONAR have been developed and deployed relatively widely but adoption still lags. With the most recent releases, attempts have been made to improve ease of deployment and documentation. There have been successful islands of perfSONAR meshes such as ESnet, Internet2 and a nascent effort within The Quilt. However, an overarching architecture for deployment in the research and education environment that encourages information sharing is still lacking.

OARnet and Internet2 are hosting a workshop that will focus on practical matters of deployment through hands-on sessions. The main body of the workshop will cover scalable deployments that are usable by the community in more meaningful forms than currently available. Sessions will include presentations by leaders in the perfSONAR space who will discuss successes and challenges as well as design principles with the ultimate goal of producing a recommendation for the perfSONAR deployment architecture. Additionally, there will be opportunities to provide feedback to perfSONAR developers and to gain a deeper understanding of the technology.

Meeting Format

The workshop will include a combination of invited speakers and community-proposed presentations in a format designed to encourage lively, interactive discussions with the goal of developing a set of tangible next steps for sharing community knowledge and expanding perfSONAR deployments.

The event agenda is still under development, but will run from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on both days. A detailed program will be posted by December 17, 2014, so please check back!
