Building Network Awareness in High Energy Physics Data Models

Session Abstract

Scientific collaborations today build on highly distributed computing and storage facilities, together with high performance networks and software systems in order to process the massive amounts of data. Such collaborations happen increasingly on a global scale.
In this session, we explore ways scientific applications benefit through interacting with the network in two ways: through gathering, evaluating and using information on the network state, and through allocation of network resources of known capacity for a specified amount of time.
In the first case, intelligent decisions can be taken in order to increase the efficiency in management of scientific workflows as well as selection of data paths for data movement as well as remote data access.
The second case provides a path to increased determinism in data movement, and possibly paves the way to co-scheduling of network, storage and computing resources.
The proposed presentations will give an overview of the paradigm and software systems developed within the space of High Energy Physics workflow and data management. They are based on recent experience in DYNES and ANSE projects, as well as the deployment of PerfSONAR in many LHC computing sites, steered through efforts in the OSG and WLCG.
The session will consist of 4 presentations, followed by 10-15 minutes of discussion (for a total of 60-75 minutes). The proposed presentations are:
