Session Abstract

For the first time, multiple dental schools (Michigan, Pittsburgh and North Carolina) are collaborating on an Internet2 Net+ Service Validation of a cloud-based Electronic Health Record (EHR) --ICE Health Systems, Inc., that will result in measurable improvements in patient and educational outcomes, facilitate clinical research across institutions, and decrease EHR costs. Precedents are being set, with the support of the Internet2 NET+, for future cloud-based healthcare services in areas such as privacy and confidentiality, legal and security. Collaborative research is underway to support a learning health system through data integration, the use of standards such as diagnostic codes, and user centered design. Client-server-based EHRs no longer meet the needs of dental institutions and are ripe for replacement by evolving dental EHRs that align with institutional strategies such as movement to the cloud; and unified health record and securely sharable data for improved patient outcomes and research. Each collaborating school will lay the foundation for a careful expansion of ICE by piloting it in one clinic plus adding one service school-wide. The service will be made available to Internet2 members and to dental schools worldwide.
