US Ignite and Other Innovative Campus Networking Applications

Time 04/07/14 03:00PM-04:00PM

Room Governor's Square 10

Session Abstract

This session presents talks on new applications that require the support of campus networks. While the current impetus is toward hosting services and applications in cloud provider networks, this session describes projects that require campus deployment. While some applications require the tightly coupled processors of supercomputers, others can be distributed to run on campus based compute clusters or desktop computers. While some data-intensive science projects use the paradigm of moving programs to where the data is located, others use a push model to distribute data to campus clusters where analytical/visualization programs are executed.

The first talk is on the NSF supported US Ignite project whose goal is to foster the creation of low-latency next-generation Internet applications. The second talk is on the HTCondor project whose goal is to support High Throughput Computing (HTC) on large collections of distributively owned computing resources. The last two talks describe new NSF CC-NIE integration projects: (i) using Named Data Networking (NDN) to support climate modeling, and (ii) using reliable multicast over layer-2 circuits on Internet2’s AL2S, ION services and the DYNES instrument to distribute weather data to over 200 institutions.
