An Industry Perspective on SDN for Multi-Layer Networks

Time 04/10/14 08:45AM-10:00AM

Room Plaza Court 1

Session Abstract

With the increasing deployment of converged transport networks that integrate switching along with next-gen optics, carriers are now seeking to extend SDN concepts of network programmability to multi-vendor, multi-layer IP/optical networks, and leveraging SDN to simplify operations as well as optimize utilization of resources. While industry focus has been on enabling SDN for packet systems within the data center, many of the same concepts are now under study by organizations such as the ONF, and are being logically extended towards the converged optical transport layer. The objectives of Multi-Layer SDN are multifold:
• Unify the control plane for the packet and optical layers
• Enable programmability of the multi-layer network by external applications
• Virtualize network resources and support a simple abstraction for provisioning bandwidth services
• Simplify, orchestrate, and automate provisioning operations in a multi-vendor, multi-layer environment
• Enable improved utilization of network resource across multiple network layers based on network analytics
• Speed the delivery of bandwidth services, wherever and whenever needed
This session provides perspectives from the vendor, R&E, and standards communities on recent advances in SDN technologies and prototyping for provisioning and optimizing multi-layer core networks. Implementation experiences with OpenFlow will be shared, along with identification of key areas for further focus.
