Utilizing Internet2’s 100Gb/s Innovation Platform and a Distributed Parallel File System for Data Transfers

Session Abstract

At SC13 Clemson, University of Southern California, Internet2 and Omnibond demonstrated 80Gb/s bandwidth utilization with simultaneous file transfers over the Internet2 Innovation Platform. The test environment included one node located at each of the four booths on the exhibit floor of SC13 and six nodes on the USC campus all connected at 10Gb/s back to a 16 node storage cluster on Clemson’s Campus. OrangeFS, a production quality open source parallel file system, the next generation of the Parallel Virtual File System (PVFS), was configured on each node, creating a geographically diverse distributed system for file creation and access. The file transfer performance tests were conducted multiple times during SC13 with accompanying visualizations. This session will give an overview of the configuration and testing that was performed and the visualization tools used to show the performance metrics as well as an overview of OrangeFS.
