H. David Lambert

ORG Internet2 Title President and CEO BIO H. David Lambert has more than 30 years of distinguished experience in the advanced research and education networking and information technology fields. Mr. Lambert has held a variety of leadership positions at Georgetown University, Cornell University, and Indiana University and has served on numerous higher education technology associations and advisory boards. He became president and chief executive officer of Internet2 on July 7, 2010. Internet2 Leadership President Lambert works with the Internet2 Board of Trustees and the Executive Leadership Team to further establish Internet2 as the partner of choice for the U.S. and international research and education community; seeking to enhance research collaboration, network services and infrastructure throughout the world. Under his leadership, Internet2 is building on the organization's membership foundations to establish a unique set of unified capabilities that empower innovation for U.S. and global research and education institutions by leveraging the organization's core principles of innovation, transformation, and community. Mr. Lambert also guides Internet2 and its members to engage global research and education network leaders, to build broader consensus on strategic programs and services in areas critical to Internet2 members and partners. His ability to bring the research and education community and industry together has yielded extraordinary results in a very short period of time. Lambert's first challenge included leading and completing in April 2013 the world's first, 100 Gigabit per second transcontinental research and education network, with the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Sciences Network (ESnet). In July 2010, the Commerce Department awarded more than $62.5 million in federal stimulus funding through the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program to Internet2 to build Internet2's new network that links regional networks across the nation. While building Internet2's new 100G network, Lambert collaborated with industry and other executives to launch the Internet2 Innovation Platform Initiative, which provides new solutions, such as software-defined networking and high-performance scientific applications. This technology accelerates collaborative scientific research and transforms university business services to strengthen the nation's position as a global research and education leader. To complement the new network, President Lambert announced, in Fall 2011, partnerships with 13 campuses and several vendors to deliver new Internet2 NET+ Services including cloud computing and expanded infrastructure services. NET+ Services has grown to include more than 30 services and more than 100 universities, representing tens of millions of dollars in service value. As an outgrowth of this vision, Internet2 is developing the NET+ Regional Partners Program, NET+ Global Partners Program and the NET+ Research and Scholarly Content efforts to benefit additional higher education, K-12, libraries, museums and other community anchor institutions. In October 2012, Internet2 announced a three-year plan to enhance research and collaboration between U.S. and Chinese researchers, scientists, educators and higher education leaders to address global infrastructure needs and foster the continuing exchange of ideas to produce growth and innovation. Internet2, in partnership with New York University, Duke University, University of Chicago and Florida International University, also established in May 2013, an advanced data and communications network facility in Singapore. The new facility supports member campuses in the Asia-Pacific region. Since coming to Internet2, President Lambert has formed strategic industry partnerships and active collaborations with a wide-variety of companies, including: Amazon Web Services, Adobe, Box, Ciena, Dell, Juniper, McGraw-Hill, Microsoft, and many others. These partnerships are designed to create new opportunities to innovate and transform Internet2 member and non-member campuses and directly benefit faculty, staff and students. To further assist Internet2 members, higher education and industry, Lambert opened a West Coast office in the San Francisco Bay Area. This office allows Internet2 leaders and staff better access to technology leaders, innovative networking companies and our western membership. The West Coast presence seeks to influence the direction technology companies take in areas ranging from e-textbooks to very large-scale data scientific research. President Lambert values his work with the research and education community and industry. He looks forward to building on these developments expanding our focus on advanced network and cloud services; global, national and regional collaborations; and industry and research partnerships that benefit Internet2 members and the global research and education community. Professional, Academic and Personal Prior to joining Internet2, Mr. Lambert was the first Vice President for Information Services and Chief Information Officer at Georgetown University, from 1998 to 2010. He was recruited to Georgetown University from Cornell University, where he served as Vice President for Information Technology from 1994 through 1997 and as Director of Network Services from 1989 through 1993. Before joining Cornell in 1989, Lambert held several technical and leadership positions at Indiana University, Bloomington. Lambert has held or holds leadership and advisory positions in numerous higher education technology associations and boards. His academic background includes a B.A. in Political Science from West Virginia University and doctoral studies in Political Science at Indiana University, Bloomington. He also holds the Professional Manager Certificate from Indiana University's Graduate School of Business. He and his wife, Carol, live in Bethesda, Maryland.
