Dynamic Software-Defined Network (SDN) Infrastructure Test bed at Marist College with IBM and ADVA Optical Networking

Session Abstract

Cost effective infrastructure for Internet2 communities require networks that can automate cloud network provisioning and commissioning while dynamically responding to changes in workload or traffic patterns. This enables more cost effective service offerings to Internet2 communities through network virtualization. This panel discussion describes the results of a Software-Defined Network (SDN) testbed at Marist College which combines data center switching and long distance optical networking between three simulated data centers under a common SDN network controller. We demonstrate rapid provisioning and dynamic wavelength assignment in response to changes within application requirements. This provides cost effective resource pooling within and between data centers. A short term application is disaster recovery and business continuity between multiple data centers separated by metropolitan area distances up to 300km. Another example would be several data centers interconnected to accommodate applications such as Big Data Analytics for a healthcare facility with a prescribed traffic pattern and network bandwidth allocation that changes based on workload. In the event of a natural disaster such as a hurricane, it would be beneficial if the inter-site network could quickly be reconfigured to facilitate transferring all mission critical data and applications outside the affected region
