Network Power Measurement Experiences at ESnet
Time 01/16/13 02:00PM-02:20PM
Green computing has become an area of great interest in recent times. While there has been a lot of work on measuring the power utilization of compute resources there has been relatively little work done on measuring power utilization of networks. ESnet is working to develop a conceptual model for how to quantify the power utilization of networks. To that end ESnet has been collecting power data for the ANI network since November 2011 and for ESnet 5 (both optical and routed) since October of 2012. This talk will present the conceptual model and will also cover the details of what data is collected, how it is collected and show some ways this data is visualized. There will also be discussion of the issues faced as this service was developed and about future directions.
