Network Tools Tutorial

Time 04/23/12 12:00PM-01:00PM

Session Abstract

The Network Tools Tutorial highlights the research and development of novel network tools by members of the Internet2 community. This year we are proud to present work by two Ph.D. students:

Ezra Kissel (University of Delaware) will discuss the RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) standard, and how it is now possible to support high-performance and low overhead data movement over existing wide-area Ethernet infrastructure. At the same time, achieving expected WAN utilization with existing tools and libraries presents additional challenges when dealing with an asynchronous communication model over high-latency paths. He will discuss experiences in evaluating RDMA within wide-area network testbeds, using both currently available benchmarks and custom implementations, to demonstrate the ability to perform TCP-to-RDMA adaptation within the Phoebus Gateway system.

Zhenzhen Yan (University of Virginia) and Chris Tracy (ESnet) will present an overview of a a hybrid network traffic engineering system (HNTES) for redirection of alpha (high-rate) flows. Supporting both large, and general-purpose, flows on network requires methods to identify and classify the traffic as it reaches a network ingress, and find an efficient path (often in the form of a virtual circuit) toward the egress. This talk will present an offline method, based on netflow data from the ESnet network, capable of classifying traffic efficiently.
