Internet2 Panel: Expanding the Research Horizons and Impact of Less Research Intensive Institutions

Time 04/24/12 04:30PM-05:30PM

Session Abstract

Internet2 provides and expands high-bandwidth IT infrastructure and assets that enable forefront research, enhance creative and scholarly endeavors in many disciplines, and foster collaborations. To date, most of the use has been centered at major research universities. For smaller or less research-intensive institutions the benefits of Internet2 use can be dramatic: expanding research opportunities, enriching the arts and humanities as well as science and engineering, catalyzing community-driven efforts to improve science education and literacy, and making possible real-time collaborations and mentoring with remote partners. Yet few faculty and students at such institutions know what Internet2 can provide and few such campuses can afford the membership and connectivity fees.

This panel and discussion will highlight the potential of Internet2 for such institutions, feature examples (including non-research examples) from several disciplines and campuses, and brainstorm ways to overcome the awareness, financial, and technical barriers that have slowed or blocked participation. Since many of these institutions have significant populations of traditionally underrepresented and underserved individuals, fuller engagement by these campuses in Internet2 can also broaden participation and bring otherwise untapped ideas into the mix.
