Scientific Cooperation and Research Cyberinfrastructures in Central and Eastern Europe

Time 10/01/12 04:30PM-05:30PM

Session Abstract

Collaborative research and development of emerging ICT applications for public sectors like health, education, culture, etc. could be driven either by industry or by social challenges. It is visible especially among priorities of research initiatives and funding agencies at global, European and national levels (e.g. US UCAN, Future Internet, Horizon 2020 or Innovative Economy in case of Poland) that latter become more significant for new technological breakthroughs or for developing and evolving advanced applications to meet requirements of various end users. On the other hand, the Internet 2 community may know very well main Cyberinfrastructure stakeholders in Europe, but it may not be fully aware of good examples of coopearative research in Central and Eastern Europe related to new applications developed with the usage of advanced networking, computing, big data, or semantic technologies. Therefore, in this session we propose to bring together different domain experts and partners who have been conducting R&D initatives together with PSNC over the last ten years. We will focus on the non-technical context and present various software solutions and lessons learned thanks to collaborative research efforts and the engagement of different user communities, e.g. clinicians. PSNC as the operator of Polish Optical Internet PIONIER as well as HPC center and the owner of advanced data and visualization infrastructure has been participating successfuly in over sixty international projects taking the advantage of innovative underlying infrastructures. We believe that sharing our expertise with Internet2 communities can be of great importance for increasing level of global and cross-Atlantic cooperation around strategic technologies and advanced Cyberinfrastructure.
