Network Tools Tutorial

Time 04/18/11 10:00AM-11:30AM

Session Abstract

The Network Tools Tutorial is a forum to showcase the latest developments in software development for network research. This session will feature presentations from leading voices in the community.

Seth Peery from Virginia Tech will discuss a method for integrating Internet2's Network Diagnostic Tool (NDT) with web-based mapping platforms as a means to assess end user network performance and analyze the results spatially. His talk will provide an accessible introduction to the general approach, but will primarily focus on its applications, the most recent of which include SBDD-funded state broadband mapping efforts, federal initiatives, Internet2 projects, and pure academic research.

Zhenzhen Yan from the University of Virginia will present results from a statistical analysis of Internet2 perfSONAR data, focusing on OWAMP (one-way ping) measurements. The purpose of the analysis is to determine the frequency with which router buffer occupancy increases to a large enough extent that OWAMP delay measurements are significantly longer than one-way propagation delays. The motivation for studying this issue is to determine whether large-sized ("elephant") flows negatively impact the delay mean/jitter performance of other flows.

Finally, Jason Zurawski from Internet2 will discuss the pressing need for the network operations community to adopt performance monitoring tools as a part of normal process. This presentation will outline a recent failure that went unnoticed through traditional means, and was quickly discovered and solved through the help of the perfSONAR framework.
