Rural Hospital Networks HIE Initiatives and the Journey Toward Meaningful Use

Session Abstract

A panel presentation will include an overview of the system of health networking initiatives in Kansas. Kristi Gosser and Lenora Kinzie, with Stormont-Vail HealthCare will describe how the hospital employs HD videoconferencing to support continuing education for nurses and physicians, patient education and consultations within a network of nineteen primarily rural hospitals and multiple clinics. Trisha Harkness, Practice Consultant with the Kansas HIT Regional Extension Center (HITREC) and the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care (KFMC) will provide overview and insights regarding initiatives supported by the HITREC in Kansas including the use of networked video services to support information and educational activities with priority primary care providers to assist them in achieving meaningful use of EHR. Jennifer Findley with the Kansas Hospital Association (KHA) and the Kansas Health Education Research Foundation (KHERF) will discuss the context of rural hospital networks in Kansas and the efforts underway to utilize broadband networks to support collaborative initiatives contributing to the implementation of HIE on a statewide basis in Kansas.
