Federating Non-Web Applications: An Update

Time 10/04/11 03:00PM-04:00PM

Session Abstract

This session provides an update on using federated identities with non-web (non-browser) applications, such as secure shell (SSH). Presentation topics will include Project Moonshot, SAML ECP, and CILogon. Project Moonshot (www.project-moonshot.org) is developing a general approach to binding federated identity to non-web protocols and standardizing its technologies through the IETF. SAML ECP (wiki.shibboleth.net/confluence/display/SHIB2/ECP) is an adaptation of the SAML profile used for browser single sign-on that removes the browser dependency, supported by the current Shibboleth IdP and SP. It is also being adapted for use within the IETF's GSS and SASL frameworks. CILogon (www.cilogon.org) uses federated identities to issue X.509 certificates for use with research cyberinfrastructure. The session will compare these different approaches for federating non-web applications, discuss the current state of the technologies, and highlight both current and future use cases.
