Network Tuning for Rapid Transmission of Multispectral Images for Relief Efforts in Haiti

Session Abstract

The recent earthquake disaster in Haiti created a need for immediate detailed information from affected areas in order to deploy aid quickly to save lives and to strategically plan for on-going support and reconstruction efforts. The World Bank contracted with RIT and ImageCat Inc. for high quality multispectral imagery and LiDAR data to be acquired by low aerial flyovers using special technologies from RIT's Laboratory for Imaging Algorithms and Systems and from Kucera International. This imagery needed to be acquired immediately, transferred back to RIT as quickly as possible, processed, and then made available for public redistribution via channels such as Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, USGS, ERDAS, World Bank, United Nations, University of Buffalo and other agencies. This session will highlight the special high resolution characteristics of the images acquired, the network tuning required to move the data as quickly as possible between Puerto Rico and Rochester, New York, and the processing and redistribution challenges faced on short notice.
