African REN Development

Time 04/28/10 08:45AM-10:00AM

Session Abstract

The arrival of significant fibre capacity to sub-Saharan Africa, combined with the growth of awareness as well as NREN activity on the continent, have produced significant synergy that is, at last, bringing to the African NREN community the same opportunities availble elsewhere in the world. The many challenges this necessarily creates also present opportunities for creative solutions to ensure that Africa can start reaping the benefits of effective Research and education networking.

This session, under the chair of the Association of African Universities, will create opportunity for identified key players who are working cooperatively to promote REN activities in Africa to share the progress, the challenges, and the solutions that are being applied.

Key players, from among whom presenters will be selected, include:

- The Association of African Universities Research and Education Networking Unit
- UbuntuNet Alliance for Research and Education Networking
- West and Central African Research and Education Network
- The Internet Educational Equal Access Foundation
- The European Union
- IDRC
- Partnership for Higher Education in Africa
- USAID
