eHealth Dedicated eInfrastructures in Italy

Consortium GARR, the Italian Research and Education Network, is actively assisting since 2005 the eHealth research community in Italy. With support from the Italian Ministry of Healthcare, GARR has connected almost all 45 Research Hospitals and is supporting them in the use of high capacity access and developing specific services. The eHealth community is now better equipeed for internal research and for supporting international projects. The presentation will detail the cuurent status of the project, the results achieved and possibilities for international collaboration.
GARR and the Italian Ministry of Health signed an agreement with Consortium GARR (the Italian Research and Education Network) for continuing the provision of network connectivity and services to Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care (IRCCS) for the period 2009-2011.
The agreement extends the scope of the previous project, approved in 2005 and addressing the connection of 39 IRCCSs. The new project, that will include 6 new institutes and the headquarter of the Ministry itself, will upgrade the network access capacity and it will provide backup lines, ensuring higher resilienc .
Besides catering for high-quality network connectivity and services, access to the GARR network empowers scientific cooperation, both amongst the IRCCS community and towards the Research and Education community in Italy and worldwide.
