Connecting to the NHIN - Use Cases in Healthcare IT from Federal Agencies

Time 04/27/10 03:00PM-04:00PM

Session Abstract

National Health Information Network (NHIN) establishes the first interstate application of a live health information exchange, supporting meaningful use of health IT by government agencies and individual care givers.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) was the first federal agency to use the NHIN as a tool to gain rapid access to electronic health information. In its partnership with MedVirgina, SSA used NHIN technologies to speed the delivery of clinical health records of patients awaiting medical disability decisions. In accelerating the process from weeks to days, the project dramatically improved the quality of life of individual patients and eliminated costs associated with manual records.

In this talk, we report the experience of SSA with an eye towards an era of rapid adoption and meaningful use of IT among agencies and hospitals.

Several topics will be covered, including: Key lessons from the SSA-MedVirginia partnership most relevant to agencies, other HIE
