CIC InCommon Silver Project

Time 04/28/10 08:45AM-10:00AM

Session Abstract

Trust, privacy, and security issues related to managing individuals digital identities needs to be addressed in order to increase the opportunities for collaboration within the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, CIC. Access to higher risk services (e.g. HathiTrust, CourseShare, athletic event ticketing, and TeraGrid) require a trust framework such as the one provided by the InCommon Silver Assurance Profile. Constituents groups within the CIC such as the University Registrars, University Libraries, Research, and Software Licensing attempt to balance the benefits of collaborating with security. The CIC institutions have an opportunity to better align policies, practices, and technologies in support of new and existing federated services. This session will share a project plan and approach adopted by the CIC for obtaining the goal of all CIC schools certifying as InCommon Silver by Fall 2011. Universities with different operational practices will share their experiences and lessons learned during phase I of this project including struggles to cast the InCommon Silver assessment factors into auditable controls
