Two Use-cases for HD Videoconferencing in Health Care

Time 04/27/10 03:00PM-04:00PM

Session Abstract

The first of April 2009 SURFnet launched SURFcontact. SURFcontact is a HD (high definition) videoconference service for health care, education and research. After a short introduction into the SURFcontact service we will focus on two use-cases for HD videoconferencing in health-care. In this presentation we will not focus on the technical details of the videoconferencing service, but show how HD videoconferencing is applied in health care. The first use-case will focus on the usage of HD videoconferencing to support cancer treatment by support of oncological specialists. Facilitation of oncological consultancy services was, up until a few years ago, always performed by arranging transport and meeting venues for oncological specialists. Time spent in transporting medical specialists is very expensive and travelling in general can be uncomfortable for specialists. HD videoconferencing can save a lot of money and discomfort. The second use-case will focus on the usage of HD videoconferencing to support knowledge exchange by ear, nose and throat specialists during surgical procedures.
