Building the Foundation of Unified Communication Services to the Education Community

Time 11/02/10 03:00PM-04:00PM

Session Abstract

Over years, education institutions in the USA and abroad have been trying to create their own communication infrastructure. Many are still using old-fashioned voice PBXs and are looking for a business case to replace them with something new. While replacing an old PBX with a new IP-PBX is an option, such an upgrade does not leverage the efficiencies and the economies of scale that the Internet2 community creates.
In the past, several attempts were made to get consensus around creating a shared real-time infrastructure that can be used by all Internet2 members; however, these discussions died down as the Internet2 community focused on more urgent and immediate needs such as federated identity and single sign-on.
The Fall Internet2 Meeting in Atlanta is a great opportunity to re-start the discussion, look at the business case for creating a shared communication infrastructure, and measure the interest among Internet2 members.
This presentation will discuss options for leveraging the existing Internet2 capacity and creating an intelligent, scalable, and reliable infrastructure for Unified Communication services to the education community. It will also address the green aspects of shared infrastructure and cloud services.
