Session Abstract

At Virginia Tech, we developed a web-based broadband mapping application that combines the Network Diagnostic Tool (NDT) with a Google Map to create volunteered geographic information. Our adaptation of NDT to suit the needs of this project was an early example of a new class of
increasingly common "mashup" applications that combine NDT with value-adding front-end applications. To help streamline the process of
integrating NDT into other applications, we developed a JavaScript API for NDT that exposes some of the most popular data elements to downstream web developers. The case of NDT's "adaptive reuse" into a new application domain raises an interesting set of questions regarding the fundamentally blurred nature of the demarcation between the "core" of a testing platform and its many applications.
