Session Abstract
New innovations are making Internet-based collaboration and resource sharing in research and education not only feasible, but incredibly convenient. This session will focus on how video conferencing is evolving in order to provide the technology and support necessary to connect students with innovative, extraordinary learning programs. J. W. Penland will discuss examples of organizations such as the Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling (JOIDES) and the University of Manchester that are using advanced visual communications solutions to offer students rich educational experiences.
With JOIDES, more than 350 U.S. students have connected with scientists aboard a research vessel through video conferencing, engaging in interactive sessions that included file sharing of real-time scientific data from the ocean floor. The University of Manchester is utilizing advanced video conferencing and collaboration tools to expand its youth mathematics program to remote areas throughout the UK where teachers were previously unavailable.
