OmniPoP GigaPOP-of-GigaPOP Design and Future

Time 04/25/07 01:15PM-02:30PM

Session Abstract

OmniPoP is a new "GigaPoP of GigaPoPs" that went live in Chicago September 2006, which grew out of a collaboration among CIC participants (most Big10 athletic conference universities plus
the University of Chicago and University of Illinois - Chicago) to jointly purchase fiber in downtown Chicago. Today, OmniPoP provides layer 2 production services for its members to connect to national and international R&E networks such as Internet2 and NLR, as well as commercial networks, through provisioning of individual (per-member), point-to-point VLANs across best-effort, shared 10GE connections. Private, dedicated 1Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 10GbE point-to-point links are also available to OmniPoP participants. OmniPoP is examining how new WAN services, such as hybrid networking, can be extended through its infrastructure through the regional optical networks (RONs) and
GigaPOP and to campuses they support.

In this session, we will discuss the role OmniPoP plays in the region and how we have been able to successfully collaborate given diverse viewpoints and geographies. We will explore the motivations and requirements which led to the design and implementation choices for OmniPoP. And we will delve into the technical requirements for supporting a "GigaPOP of GigaPOPs", now and in the future.
