Constantly expanding demands for network bandwidth continue to drive the adoption of multi-wavelength optical technologies in metropolitan and regional core transport networks. Simultaneously, the ubiquity and economics of Ethernet access devices are driving demand for efficient, reliable delivery of Ethernet-centric services. The combination of bandwidth demand, cost advantage and new applications is driving the emergence of a new generation of transport networks comprised of three specific technologies: reconfigurable DWDM optical transport, carrier-grade Ethernet service delivery, and the unified GMPLS-based network control plane. This session describes the many new data plane and control plane technologies emerging to enable construction of converged Optical + Ethernet transport networks and provides examples of how these technologies can be combined with existing reconfigurable DWDM transport elements and Ethernet access devices to form a new, unified transport network architecture. The advent of new optical transport elements with Layer 2 awareness, combined with Ethernet delivery elements with improved service awareness and OA&M capabilities, has the potential to significantly alter how metro and regional transport networks are deployed and managed. This session intends to provide members of the R&E community with a solid understanding of the options and benefits provided by a converged Optical + Ethernet transport network. .
A Services Delivery Architecture Model for Campus Environments

The poster will propose an architecture model for delivering voice, video and data services over a unified network in campus environments. This architecture is well suited for campus and living quarters networks as it enables university personnel to rapidly deploy services, in these environments, in a cost effective manner. This architecture also provides end to end network and service management capabilities which enables university personnel to have better visibility of the service performance and helps them troubleshoot their network rapidly.
Reliable Networking—New Innovations

And that reliability needs to extend all the way from the wide area network, to the LAN and the wiring closet. Digital Optical Networking and Bandwidth Virtualization

Bandwidth virtualization refers to one of the key attributes of a digital optical network, where the services are decoupled from the transmission network to enable a flexible mix of services and unconstrained service reconfigurability without re-engineering the transmission network. Bandwidth virtualization is characterized by the following features:
- DWDM line capacity between nodes that is cost-optimized, scalable, pre-tested and ready for service. Large-scale photonic integration provides an ideal platform for cost-effective DWDM capacity scaling.
- Integrated bandwidth management that enables the flexible mapping of any service to available line side bandwidth.
- Pluggable service interface cards with ability to support multiple service types
- Embedded software intelligence to appropriately map services (sub-lambda, lambda or super-lambda services) to the pool of available bandwidth and manage the service delivery end-to-end.

Update from the Seattle Innovation Symposium: The Open Knowledge Base of Innovation Research

The Seattle Innovation Symposium is an annual meeting at the University of Washington, bringing together more than 100 multidisciplinary researchers and IT industry leaders for an unprecedented collaboration in emerging technology innovation. The 2005 SIS focused on the creation of new billion-dollar markets, while the 2006 SIS emphasized the interaction between physical presence and high-bandwidth collaboration technologies to support highly creative processes, including the formation of new businesses. This poster session will bring new insights from the 2007 SIS occurring just before the Fall Member's Meeting—one topic from which will be the challenges in developing an open knowledge base of innovation research.
Bringing the Future Closer: The Emergence of the Natioinal Academic Supercomputer Centers

How were the national academic supercomputer centers created in 1985? What were the historical conditions that supported their creation? How did the centers change the practice of science and the production of knowledge? www.hpchistory.org will debut as a poster at SC07 to help answer these questions through its initial project: the emergence of the national academic supercomputer centers from 1984-1989: the Cornell Supercomputer Center, the John Von Neuman Supercomputer Center, the National Center for Supercomputer Applications, and the San Diego Supercomputer Center. This poster is a digital history project supporting a PhD dissertation in the History of Science at University of California, San Diego. It is a multimedia archive of primary sources, such as proposals and reports, oral history video interviews from individuals who launched the Centers, and a portal accepting contributions for the historical record from participants who worked on projects at the Centers during this period.
