Scaling the Adoption of Advanced Applications

Time 04/26/06 03:00PM-04:00PM

Session Abstract

How can we widen and accelerate the adoption of advanced network applications to support teaching and learning? And what will be the impacts on state networks and local campuses when we succeed? Dr. Fred Rees will describe a recent symposium conducted by the IU School of Music at IUPUI for Indiana's college and university music faculty to jointly identify projects to exploit Internet2 for music performance, research, and teaching around the state, nation, and world. Session attendees will discuss strategies for moving from the successful demonstration projects of major universities and urban conservatories to routine practice among liberal arts, baccalaureate, and comprehensive institutions. Driving the growth from within disciplines offers a greater likelihood of success than preaching by technologists. The spread of optical network access will help, but consistently high quality will take more than bigger pipes. The 35 SEGP state networks participating in Internet2 will need to share strategies among themselves and with the colleges they connect, including collaboration with their own Internet2 member institutions.
