Leveraging Identity Management to Share Campus Computational Resources and Expose Use Across Administrative Domains

Time 04/26/06 03:00PM-04:00PM

Session Abstract

The first half of this session will describe a scalable, web-enabled infrastructure called UABgrid that provides transparent certificate management for the campus grid environment. UABgrid is a collaboration between academic and administrative IT units at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, including office of the Vice President for Information Technology, Computer and Information Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Biostatistics, Microbiology, and Structural Biology. UAB?s central IT organization provides a BlazerID Central service as part of the campus architecture, a single management point for password resets, email account creation or deactivation, and user-authoritative attribute management. Authorization is currently managed by contents of the grid mapfile. Each system administrator can make use of that information to implement their respective usage policies. Users access UABgrid via Pubcookie, and we are in the process of upgrading this to modification to support Shibboleth. Through CA bridges such as SURAgrid resource sharing can be authorized across institutions.

The second half of the session will discuss mechanisms that are being explored that would allow a university to share its computational resources and take advantage of the resources others shared across these administrative domains. This approaches leverages current work being done with SAML products like Shibboleth, policy expression and enforcement, attribute based access control, and job scheduling systems.
